REVIEW | BROKEN BELLS (self titled album)
By Leticia
Super producer Danger Mouse dips his finger in yet another pie with The Shins’ James Mercer to form Broken Bells. A collaborative project that was born out of mutual admiration for each other’s music, the dynamic duo has created a concept album that transcends the airwaves and leaves the listener floating in outer space. Arguably, not the most groundbreaking work from either artist, the tasteful collaboration couples Mercer’s indie rock influence with Danger Mouses’s psychedelic sounds and take the listener on an aural journey.
The album is melodic and experimental as it plays around with interesting instrumentation and vocal production, although it is not likely to rouse listeners out of their seat, instead creates an atmospheric ambience that is, at times, reminiscent of Air’s Moon Safari.
A seemingly effortless combination of a unique arrangement of synthesiser sounds and string instruments, ‘Sailing to Nowhere’ seems to make classical and modern qualities go together like peas and carrots.
There is some attempt to chop up the tempo and dynamics, but the songs tend to blend into one another and at times, it is hard to tell where one song ends and the next begins. Whether this was intentional or not, Broken Bells manage to pull it off with the precision you would expect of Danger Mouse. Pretty chilled-out overall, the album is aurally pleasing and worthy of repeated listening.
BEST LISTENED TO
WHEN: (B)lazing on a sunny afternoon when you have spare time to kick back and be whisked away by the music.
